You get full-text search, filtering by tags, authors and more, and it displays a nice cover image for you while you browse. Calibre lets you edit the metadata stored with a file, and will pull in information from multiple sources for you. I've used the desktop clients for both Windows and OSX, and while it's a little old-fashioned looking, it has some extremely powerful features.

)įor a long time, I've been using Calibre to keep my e-books and other electronic documents organized (epub, pdf, etc). Maybe prefer the EPUB format with the server, resorting to PDF only when absolutely necessary? The UI (especially while reading a book) probably won't win any beauty awards, but it's a really nice tool. There are configurations for adding an SSL certificate, setting up user accounts, and disabling guest access, which makes it a really secure browser.I setup the server on a home PC, and while the graphics for some of the PDFs I uploaded look pretty wonky, most of the books I checked out look fine.

April 2020: Calibre is under constant development, and since I wrote this a couple years ago I see options that I didn't notice back then.
